Each year the New England Eye Center/Tufts University School of Medicine (NEEC) and Ophthalmic Consultants of Boston (OCB) sponsor a year-long clinical fellowship in glaucoma. The fellowship is approved by the Association of University Professors of Ophthalmology. The program comes from a long tradition of over 35 years of training glaucoma specialists and providing extensive exposure to the medical and surgical management of glaucoma.
Our fellowship program has substantial strengths including:
- One of the largest glaucoma faculties in the country.
- 13 active glaucoma clinicians, themselves trained at the best institutes.
- Fellows benefit tremendously from learning a diversity of approaches to many aspects of glaucoma care, which is as much an art as it is a science.
- Two distinct training grounds.
- A large urban academic medical center and a large multi-specialty private practice.
- Each fellow spends 6 months at each location and benefits from exposure to both types of practice settings.
- A high-volume and broadly-scoped glaucoma surgical experience.
- There is no glaucoma procedure that our faculty does not do.
- Therefore fellows see and do everything: trabeculectomy; Baerveldts, Ahmeds, and Moltenos; Express devices; trans-scleral and endoscopic cyclophotocoagulation; iStent; Trabectome; canaloplasty; bleb revision; choroidal drainage; pediatric glaucoma procedures; and anterior segment laser procedures.
- An emphasis on teaching post-operative care of the glaucoma surgical patient
- Under the supervision of the faculty, fellows become completely versed in decision-making, providing emergency care, and managing complications.
- A commitment to cataract surgical training
- Fellows perform dozens of complex and non-complex cataract procedures from start-to-finish.
- A rich clinical research environment.
- Tufts/NEEC and OCB are actively engaged in industry-sponsored drug and device trials (including MIGS trials).
- Fellows may take advantage of our abundant patient populations and internal grant funding sources to devise their own prospective and outcomes-based clinical research.
- Many past fellows have published scientific articles in peer-reviewed journals.
- Introduction to professional leadership and service opportunities.
- Several members of our faculty serve and have served in leadership and committee positions within important ophthalmology organizations.
- Fellows benefit from this close exposure to the highest levels of professional service and networking
Boston is a particularly stimulating environment for advanced medical training and research both at Tufts and OCB. Beyond medicine, Boston is one of the nation’s most historic, diverse, and livable cities, offering a vast range of cultural and recreational amenities few can match.
Our fellowship program has been a solid foundation on which the careers of many leaders in the fields of glaucoma and ophthalmology have emerged. We believe that our program is one of the best in the country and provides superb preparation for future glaucoma specialists.
